How to Deposit Checks to Your Bank Account Using Your Phone

How to Deposit Checks to Your Bank Account Using Your Phone

Much ado has been made in recent years about being able to deposit checks to your bank accounts using your phone’s camera. It works well and is super convenient, so if your bank’s app offers this feature you may want to try it out.
One of the first things you need to find out is if your bank even offers an official app (they probably do), which might allow you to deposit checks from home. Word of warning: always use the official app and when you deposit checks, and make sure you don’t use it on an open Wi-Fi network.
Another thing you want to verify what kind of checks you can deposit. For example, you can probably deposit a variety of check types such as cashier’s, traveler’s, money orders, and more.
Also, make sure you know what your maximum daily amount is. If you have more to deposit than you’re allowed, you may have to actually go into your bank or space your deposits out over a few days.
Finally, make sure you know when your funds will be available. You and your bank should have some kind of depository agreement in place, and funds may not be immediately available. Remember, any deposit won’t be officially complete until your bank actually collects the money.

Using an App to Make Deposits

Using an app to make deposits from your home is one of those conveniences we should all take for granted. Most banks now have dedicated apps in the major app stores. Let’s briefly show you how you might deposit a checks using a typical banking app.

Basic Tips to Using Your Banking App’s Check Deposit

Assuming your bank lets you deposit checks from home, then you will likely only need to prepare your check by endorsing the back. You might have to write some other information such to what account the check is being deposited. Your bank will let you know what to write.

Locate the deposit option on your banking app.

You may also need to enter how much you’re depositing and, if you have more than one account, to which the funds are going.

Once you’ve squared all that away, you will capture the front of the check, and then the back.

It is best to use a dark-colored background and hold the phone as still as possible so you get it right the first time.

Send both sides on their way to your bank and make sure you get confirmation that the check has been successfully received. If you get a confirmation number, it’s best to write that down in case something goes awry.

What to Do Once the Check is Deposited

It’s a good idea to wait until you get verification from your bank that the check has been successfully deposited. As we mentioned earlier, the funds may not be immediately available and again, the transaction isn’t entirely complete until your bank receives the money from the check issuer.
That said, once the funds have been deposited and are available you should scrawl “VOID” across the face of the check or even better, shred it.

You bank should be able to explain the technical aspects of their deposit app. You should expect that the images you capture will not be stored, and that they will be encrypted before sending.
Overall, depositing checks by smartphone should be easy, safe, and secure. We’ve never experienced a problem, and can’t remember any reported case where someone has hacked the process. Of course, that doesn’t mean it won’t happen, but that also doesn’t mean someone won’t run up to you and rob you at gunpoint either.
When depositing checks at home, just remember to use you bank’s own app, don’t forget to endorse the back of your check, use a dark-colored background when capturing the check, and make sure the funds are available before voiding or shredding it.
We hope then that if you’ve never considered depositing checks using your bank’s phone app, that this article has sparked your curiosity, If you would like to ask a question or contribute a comment, please leave your feedback in our discussion forum.

How to Run Malwarebytes Alongside Another Antivirus

How to Run Malwarebytes Alongside Another Antivirus

Malwarebytes Anti-Malware is a great security tool that’s particularly effective against “potentially unwanted programs (PUPs)” and other nasty software traditional antivirus programs don’t deal with. But it’s intended to be used alongside an antivirus and doesn’t replace one entirely.
If you’re using Malwarebytes Anti-Malware, you should be running it alongside a primary antivirus program to keep your computer in tip-top security shape. But traditional advice is not to run two anti-malware programs at once. Here’s how to thread that needle.

On-Demand Scans

The standard, free version of Malwarebytes Anti-Malware just functions as an on-demand scanner. In other words, it doesn’t run automatically in the background. Instead, it only does something when you launch it and click the Scan button.
This version of Malwarebytes shouldn’t interfere with your antivirus program at all. Just install it and occasionally launch it to perform a scan and check for the “potentially unwanted programs” almost no one actually wants. It will find and remove them. Using an anti-malware program as an on-demand scanner is a safe way to get a second opinion.
You shouldn’t have to do any extra configuration here. If Malwarebytes reports some sort of error removing a piece of malware it finds, you could potentially pause or disable real-time scanning in your main antivirus program to prevent it from interfering, and then reenable real-time scanning right after. But even this shouldn’t be necessary, and we’ve never heard of anyone encountering a problem like this one.
(This is the only way Malwarebytes works on a Mac, too. It can’t perform automatic, real-time scans — just on-demand scans. Malwarebytes shouldn’t interfere with other Mac antivirus applications, if you are actually running one.)

Real-Time Scanning

The paid version of Malwarebytes Anti-Malware Premium also contains real-time scanning features. Malwarebytes will run in the background, scanning your system and files you open for problems and preventing them from taking root on your system in the first place.
The problem is that your main antivirus program is already functioning in this way. The standard advice is that you shouldn’t have real-time scanning enabled for two antivirus programs enabled at once. They can interfere with each other in a variety of ways, slowing down your computer, causing crashes, or even preventing each other from working.

To do this in Malwarebytes, open Malwarebytes, click the Settings icon, select “Malware Exclusions,” and add the folder — typically under Program Files — containing your antivirus program’s files.
Malwarebytes is coded in a different way and is designed to run alongside other antivirus programs without interfering. It may even work without any further configuration. But, to make it work as well as it possibly can and improve performance, you should set up exclusions in both Malwarebytes Anti-Malware Premium and your standard antivirus program.
In your antivirus program, load the antivirus program, find “exclusions”, “ignored files”, or a similarly named section, and add the appropriate Malwarebytes files.
You should exclude these files on 64-bit versions of Windows:
C:\Program Files (x86)\Malwarebytes Anti-Malware\mbam.exe
C:\Program Files (x86)\Malwarebytes Anti-Malware\mbamdor.exe
C:\Program Files (x86)\Malwarebytes Anti-Malware\mbampt.exe
C:\Program Files (x86)\Malwarebytes Anti-Malware\mbamservice.exe
C:\Program Files (x86)\Malwarebytes Anti-Malware\mbamscheduler.exe
C:\Windows\System32\drivers\mbam.sys
Exclude these files instead on 32-bit versions of Windows:
C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes Anti-Malware\mbam.exe
C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes Anti-Malware\mbamdor.exe
C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes Anti-Malware\mbampt.exe
C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes Anti-Malware\mbamservice.exe
C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes Anti-Malware\mbamscheduler.exe
C:\Windows\System32\drivers\mbam.sys
For more specific instructions, you might want to perform a web search for “Malwarebytes” and the name of your antivirus program. Or just perform a web search for the name of your antivirus program and “exclusions” to find out how to add those exclusions and exclude the files named on the Malwarebytes website.

Malwarebytes is designed to run alongside a normal antivirus program so you shouldn’t have to worry about this most of the time — especially if you’re just using the free version. If you’re using the paid version, setting up exclusions can help you avoid problems and maximize your computer’s performance. But even that won’t be completely necessary most of the time.

How to Prevent Identity Thieves from Opening Accounts in Your Name

How to Prevent Identity Thieves from Opening Accounts in Your Name

Everybody is getting hacked left and right. Anthem lost 80 million records. The US government got hacked and lost personal data for millions, all the way down to fingerprint data. Now Experian, a credit bureau got hacked. So how can you protect yourself from criminals opening accounts in your name?
Disclaimer: We’re not tax or financial advisors, so make sure to do your own research and maybe talk to a professional before taking any of the steps on this page. This article was written from our own experiences dealing with identity theft recently.
The Anthem hack was one of the biggest hacks ever, with social security numbers, addresses, and a lot more personal information being stolen, but it’s hardly the first — just last year, JP Morgan had 76 million customer records stolen and the Postal Service lost 800,000. And those were just the recent, high-profile hacks where personal information was lost, as opposed to Target, eBay, Sony, Home Depot, and other hacks where they mostly got emails and passwords. How many hacks haven’t been reported yet, or worse, not even noticed?
At this point it’s probably best to assume that criminals have access to enough personal information to open an account in your name, or that they will soon.
After all, you don’t really need anything but a name and a social security number to open a credit card account. Luckily there’s good news.

How to Deal with Your Personal Information Being Stolen

Most people don’t realize this, but you can actually freeze your credit report so that nobody can access it. That means that credit card companies, banks, stores, apartments, and anybody else that usually requires it will be unable to pull your credit. Which means they can’t open an account in your name.
Of course, this means that you also can’t open an account while the credit report is frozen. Luckily the three credit bureaus will allow you to temporarily (or permanently) unfreeze your credit report so you can apply for something. And then you can re-freeze it again afterward if you’d like.
The only catch to this is that depending on your state, freezing your accounts isn’t always free unless you have proof that your identity was stolen and a case report — it’s going to cost you anywhere from free up to $10 for each of the three credit bureaus. And you’re going to have to do the process separately for each one.
It’s important to keep in mind that almost every time you try to open a new account of any type — cell phone, car insurance, apartment, credit card, store card, or anything like that, your credit report will be accessed. Luckily it only takes a five minute phone call to lift the freeze, or a simple online form, and you can specify when the freeze should go back into effect. Since most creditors only use one credit bureau, you don’t need to lift the freeze on all three every time, just ask them which one they use, and lift the freeze on that one.
Should you Freeze Your Credit Reports?
That depends. If you have some reason that your credit report gets pulled on a regular basis, such as for your job, this might not work for you. If you open up accounts all the time, this will probably cause a bit of a problem for you — although our general financial advice would be that you don’t open new credit every week.
If everybody’s credit report was frozen by default except for when they needed to use it, there would be no such thing as identity theft. Think about that.

The Difference between a Security Freeze and Credit Monitoring

The credit agencies really, really, really want you to pay for credit monitoring, because it’s a recurring $10 or $20 monthly charge forever. They each offer their own “lock” feature, but only to paying customers, and you really need to pay for all three of them if you want it to work very well. Of course, that’s the solution they push in all their marketing, because that’s how they pay the bills.
But credit monitoring only alerts you after somebody opens an account in your name. What’s the point in that? Sure, you can try and fight it, but by the time that happens, the damage is already done. And if you have to pay for credit monitoring for all three agencies all the time, you’re going to just go broke.
A security freeze, on the other hand, is going to prevent anybody from opening an account without having access to all your information and your secret PIN number (a 10 digit code for two of the agencies, and a 6 digit code for the third).
If you do have to pay for a security freeze, it’s a one-time fee as opposed to a monthly fee (forever) for monitoring. To “thaw” your frozen credit report might be free depending on the state or the agency, or might cost up to $10. If you are a victim of identity theft, you can get it all for free, but you’ll need to figure out the process to officially file a report and get a case number.
When you read all of the help pages from the credit agencies, they are going to recommend that you use their other services, and make a big deal that doing a security freeze on your account is going to make it difficult to get credit. But that’s a bit of an exaggeration — you can very easily and temporarily lift a freeze should you decide to apply for something, you’ll just need to do it ahead of time. How’s that a big deal?
Bottom line, a maximum $30 one time to freeze your credit on all three bureaus is cheaper than paying $20 a month for monitoring for the rest of your life.

Freezing Your Credit Accounts

For each of the three credit bureaus, there’s a whole process you’ll need to go through — first, you’ll need to go to each of their web pages separately, put in all your personal information, if you need to pay the $10 fee, you’ll have to enter your credit card number, and then you’ll have to verify that you are who you say you are based on questions from your credit report.
We’d really recommend that you have a copy of your credit report handy, because some of those questions can be tricky.
Alternatively, you can just call each of them separately and do the process over the phone, or you can even mail the required forms and information to each of them. They’ll need things like a copy of all your information, a utility bill in your name, and some other information — you’ll need to check with each one to see what they require.
NOTE: Make absolutely certain that when you click through these links that you are on the right site. Check the address bar to make sure it shows HTTPS. Otherwise go directly to each of their sites and find the security freeze option, usually hidden at the bottom of the page.
At some point during the process you’ll either be presented with the option to choose a PIN number, or their system will automatically generate one for you. WRITE THIS NUMBER DOWN. Put it into a safe place where you will never lose it. If you want to thaw your credit report in the future, you are going to need this PIN.
If you do not save your PIN number, you’re going to have to go through a tedious process of calling the credit bureau and requesting a new one, which could take a week to get to your house via snail mail.

Alternative: Place a Fraud Alert

If you don’t want to freeze your credit entirely, you can also place a free fraud alert on your account. This works for 90 days, and then the process to continue it is a little confusing unless you have a police report. Here are the links for Equifax, Experian, and Transunion. If you do a fraud alert on one credit bureau, it will automatically apply to all three of them.
Personally, we went with the credit freeze. But it’s up to you.

One Last Note

When scammers steal your identity, they will often file a fraudulent tax return in your name, having your tax return deposited into their account instead of yours. This is a real problem — in 2012, scammers managed to collect 4 Billion dollars this way. Make sure to file your tax return as soon as possible to avoid this happening to you.

6 Ways to Open Windows Task Manager

Geek Tricks: 6 Ways to Open Windows Task Manager

taskmgr_header_final
Bringing up Windows Task Manager is not much of a task itself, but when a virus disables Ctrl+Alt+Del and takes it hostage, how else are you going to open task manager? Or maybe you’re just looking for some diversity in your life, so here are 6 different ways to open Windows Task Manager.

1) Ctrl+Alt+Del

Readers will probably be most familiar with the three-finger salute (AKA Ctrl+Alt+Del). Up until Windows Vista was released, pressing Ctrl+Alt+Del brought you directly to Windows Task Manager. Since Windows Vista, Ctrl+Alt+Del now brings you to the Windows Security screen which provides users with five different options including Windows Task Manager.
taskmgr4

2) Right-Click Taskbar

Arguably the fastest way to bring up Windows Task Manager is by right-clicking the taskbar and choosing the Start Task Manager option. It’s just two clicks and voilà! You’re staring at Task Manager in no time! Of course, you could always create an AutoHotKey script to bring up Windows Task Manager even faster with a click of a button.
taskmgr_1

3) Run taskmgr

The Run command is a great tool for accessing shared folders, but you can also use it quickly up programs such as Registry Editor or a Command Prompt. Click the Start button then the All Programs folder. Under the Accessories folder click the Run command. You can also press they Windows Key + R on your keyboard or enable the Run command in your Start Menu. Finally, simply type “taskmgr” and hit Enter.
taskmgr_2

4) Ctrl+Shift+Esc

Another quick keyboard shortcut to bring up Windows Task Manager is Ctrl+Shift+Esc. Besides bringing up Windows Task Manager while using Remote Desktop, you can also use Ctrl+Shift+Esc to bring up the task manager while working locally.
taskmgr_3

5) Browse to taskmgr.exe

This is definitely the longest way of opening the task manager, but if it’s your only option then it’s better than nothing at all. Open up Windows Explorer and navigate to C:\Windows\System32. The location of taskmgr.exe should be the same in all recent versions of Windows. Scroll down (or search) for taskmgr.exe and double click it.
taskmgr_5

6) Create taskmgr.exe Shortcut

And last on our list is creating a nice, accessible shortcut to the Task Manager on your desktop. Right-click on your desktop and choose New then click Shortcut. A new window will pop up. Browse to the same path as above, C:\Windows\System32. Scroll down until you see taskmgr.exe, highlight it, and then click OK. Click Next, type a name for your shortcut, and finally click Finish.
taskmgr_6
That’s the end of our list! Some methods are obviously more efficient than others, but if you’re in a tough situation battling a virus, any method is a good one. You can also check out our guide on how to start Task Manager in minimized mode during startup, so it will always be open when you turn your computer on.

How to Automatially Hide or Show the Menu Bar in OS X El Capitan

How to Automatially Hide or Show the Menu Bar in OS X El Capitan

Windows users have the ability to hide the Taskbar, but the menu bar in OS X is a constant presence. This isn’t necessarily bad because the menu bar doesn’t really take up that much room. If you want to hide it, however, you now can.

It’s important to note that if you want to take advantage of this feature, you must first upgrade your OS X installation to 10.11 El Capitan, which adds quite a few great new features. One of these new features, which hasn’t gotten a lot of coverage is the ability to hide and show the menu bar, a mainstay not just in OS X, but Macs in general dating back to the earliest versions of the Mac System.
The menu bar is quite versatile. You can add new controls to it, access further options using the “Option” key, and even move menu bar icons around by holding down the “Command” key.
Windows users have been able to auto-hide the taskbar since Windows 95, Mac users have not.
The thing is though, the menu bar always remains no matter what you’re doing on your Mac (unless you’re viewing a video full screen or playing a game). While it doesn’t necessarily take up a ton of vertical space, it would be nice if you could have it all, which you now can.
In order to automatically hide and show the menu bar, you will first need to open your Mac’s System Preferences and click on the “General” settings. Not a whole lot has changed since Yosemite, but there is the addition of a new feature right below the dark menu bar option.
This new option “Automatically hide and show the menu bar”, when checked, will do just as it says.
The new option, which is found under the dark menu option, is pretty straightforward and self-explanatory.
So, check the box and you’ll see that the menu bar immediately retreats into the top of the screen.
The top of our screen on our Mac, sans the menu bar.
In order to get it back, you simply need to move your pointer to the top screen edge and it will magically reappear. Move you mouse pointer away and the menu bar will again disappear. If you don’t like this feature, then simply go back into the General settings and uncheck the box.

How to Use a Cellphone Without Any Service

These days, it seems like pretty much everyone you know has got a mobile phone tucked away somewhere on their person. This also means that everyone is paying massive telecom companies a monthly premium for the chance to use it… but what if you could own a phone complete with all the same features, but no activated plan? As long as you’re near a local Wi-Fi connection, iPhones and Androids can perform all the same tricks as they usually do, except at a fraction of the cost of what your monthly bill comes out to.
Here’s our guide on how to own a cellphone, but never pay for service.

WhatsApp

Who needs texting when you’ve got the next best thing just a download away? Thanks to new texting applications like Kik and WhatsApp, the option to forego your monthly phone bill doesn’t seem nearly as daunting or scary as it used to.
Whatsapp first made headlines late last year when it was bought up by Facebook for a staggering $1.2 billion, and those numbers don’t just come from anywhere. The app has experienced overwhelming success in its short time on the market, boasting a staggering 900 million members who flock to the app as fast and functional alternative to paying for the right to talk to their friends every day.

Some of the advantages of WhatsApp over traditional texting include perks like the ability to create group chats that are compatible with all mobile operating systems, whether it’s big time players like Android or iOS, or the smaller, lesser-known alternatives like Nokia’s Symbian. This means that instead of running into nasty blocks of green text clashing against blue in your messaging window, everyone enters the chat room on equal ground, and every picture, emoji, or voice memo will go through unabated thanks to the app’s universal formatting system.
No matter what operating system you’re on though, WhatsApp is a well-rounded, quick, and endlessly rich texting application that any frugal phone owner should have installed as a mainstay for their mobile device.
Whatsapp is available on all major app stores, and you can grab it for iOS or Android by following the links here and here, respectively.

Skype

Of course, this wouldn’t be an article about using your cellphone to circumvent calling plans without mentioning the one service that started it all: Skype.
Once you install Skype on your phone and hook up to the local Wi-Fi connection, you’ll immediately be able to message, call, or video chat with anyone of your choosing. Conversely, anyone who needs to get a hold of you can do the same as long as they have the Skype client installed on their phone or desktop computer.

The main convenience of Skype is not only its ubiquity, but also the fact that it works on pretty much any mobile or stationary device you can think of. Find anyone in your phone’s standard contacts list, and it’s almost assured they’ve got a Skype handle on the side, which makes messaging and talking to them over the Internet a whole lot easier than asking them to install an add-on like Kik or Whatsapp.
Fair warning, anyone who goes this route should know that while calls made within the United States or Canada are free of charge, the cost for international correspondences can vary depending on where the call is sourced from and where it’s going to. In general, you can expect the cost to rise the farther the call has to travel over the wires to get from your phone to whomever it’s intended to reach.
You can download Skype for iOS  free of charge here, and from Google Play here.

iPhone Wi-Fi Calling

Last up, if you happen to own an iPhone and need an interim solution in the wake of a few past-due bills, iOS’ internal Wi-Fi calling feature can come through when your carrier is knocking at the door but the credit card is already maxed. Wi-Fi Calling comes as an automatic inclusion to the iOS ecosystem for anyone running iOS 8.0 or above, however to actually start a Wi-Fi call on your iPhone, you’ll need to enable the option by going into your Settings –> Phone –> Wi-Fi Calling.

From here it’s just a matter of flipping the toggle on, and any calls you make from there on out will automatically be routed to your Wi-Fi network if one is already in range. The calls will all be made from your number, and it’s what people will see on their caller ID the next time you decide to ring them up. None of these calls will be tracked by your provider, and there is no extra charge for international or long distance calls as long as they are initiated via the Wi-Fi calling protocol.
Unfortunately, for the time being the only way that Apple was able to get the carriers to agree to make it a standard feature was for the company to require users to have a plan with one of the major telecoms in their region. These include Bell and Rogers in Canada, T-Mobile and AT&T in the US, and Vodafone in the UK, although the benefit here is that calls will still go through if your service has been deactivated for a period of 30 days or less. This service is great in a pinch when you might be behind on your monthly account statement, but still need a reliable way to get in touch with friends or family members that aren’t tech savvy enough to know what a “Skype” is, or what they’re supposed to do with it.
