How to Add Custom Characters to the Apple Watch’s Monogram

00_lead_image_adding_characters_to_apple_watch
You can personalize your Apple Watch with different watch faces and “complications”, but if you really want to add a personal touch, the “Color” watch face has a cool Monogram complication, which allows you to display up to four characters on the watch face. The Monogram complication is more customizable than people realize, though.
Here’s how to customize the Monogram complication and how to access more options for characters, such as the Apple logo.
If your watch face is not currently the Color watch face, first make sure the watch face is active. If it’s not, press the digital crown until you are returned to the watch face. Then, force touch on the watch face.
01_force_touch_to_change_watch_face
The watch face selector will pop up. Swipe left or right to find the Color watch face, depending on which watch face was active.
02_swipe_left_to_change_face
Once you find the Color watch face, tap “Customize”.
03_tapping_customize_for_color_face
The first customization screen for the Color watch face allows you to choose the color. If you want to change the color, use the digital crown to select a different color. Then, swipe left to go to the second customization screen.
04_swipe_left_for_complications
This screen allows you to change which complications display on the watch face. Tap on the center complication. The only options for this spot are “None” or “Monogram”. Make sure “Monogram” is selected.
05_monogram_on
Press the digital crown until you return to the watch face. Notice the monogram at the top of the watch face.
06_default_monogram_on_face
Now that we have the Color watch face selected and the monogram complication on, you can customize the monogram using your phone. Tap the “Watch” app on the Home screen.
07_tapping_watch_app
Make sure the “My Watch” screen is active. If not, tap the “My Watch” icon at the bottom of the screen.
08_tapping_my_watch
On the “My Watch” screen, tap “Clock”.
09_tapping_clock
Tap “Monogram” on the “Clock” screen.
10_tapping_monogram
The cursor is automatically placed at the end of the current monogram. Delete the current character(s) and type letters, numbers, or symbols from the standard keyboard. Tap “< Clock” at the top of the “Monogram” screen to return to the previous screen.
11_typing_new_monogram
The character(s) you typed display to the right of the “Monogram” option on the “Clock” screen.
12_new_monogram_entered
Your new monogram displays on the Color watch face.
13_new_monogram_on_clock_face
Here’s where things get interesting. You can also add other characters as long as you can copy them from other sources. The UniChar Picker app is a great source. Search for it in the App Store and install it. Then, tap the “UniChar” icon on the Home screen to open the app.
13a_unichar_app_icon_on_phone
You can use any character from UniChar’s collection as part of your monogram. For this example, we’ll use the Apple logo. Scroll down to the “Pictographs” section and tap on the Apple logo.
14_tapping_apple_logo
The Apple Logo will show up in the “Recently Used” section. To copy the Apple Logo symbol, tap and hold on the Apple Logo…
15_recently_used
…until you see “Copied” display on the screen.
16_copied_message
Go back to the “Monogram” screen in the “Watch” app, as described earlier. Delete the current monogram and then tap and hold in that spot until you see the “Paste” popup and tap on that popup.
17_tapping_paste
The Apple Logo is inserted on the “Monogram” screen. Again, tap “Clock” at the top of the screen to accept the change and return to the Clock screen.
18_apple_logo_pasted
The Apple Logo will show up to the right of “Monogram” on the “Clock” screen.
19_monogram_with_apple_logo
The Apple Logo now displays on the Color watch face.

Some characters may not look good on the Color watch face because the character becomes very small. Try out different characters and see what you like–there’s a lot of cool stuff you can do.

What’s the Point of a Wireless Hard Drive, and Do I Need One?

hthd2
As consumers continue to shift their lives away from the desktop and onto their mobile devices, having an external hard drive that can you connect to without any cables is a convenient way to stash away photos, videos, and music you want to take with you on the road. But how do they work, and are they worth the increased cost over the more traditional external media solutions we’ve used until now?

What’s a Wireless Hard Drive?

This is particularly useful for mobile devices like smartphones or tablets, which don’t have simple USB ports like laptops–they have a Micro-USB (Android) or Lightning (iPhone) port. This means that unless you buy some very creative adapters and download third-party apps that aren’t even available in the main app stores, a regular external hard drive won’t work on many phones. Some Android devices may work with external drives but, even then, they’d lose battery very quickly powering the drive.
Traditional external hard drives require a USB port to connect to your computer. Wireless hard drives, as the name implies, use either Bluetooth or WiFi to allow almost any kind of mobile or stationary device to access the files stored inside.
abutt
Wireless hard drives are battery-powered, and constantly emit their own WiFi network that any surrounding devices can connect to with a password. If you connect to it from your PC, the drive will show up in File Explorer (Windows) or Finder (Mac OS X), just as though it were already plugged in over a physical cable. If you connect to it from a smartphone or tablet, a window should appear that will take you through all the steps you’ll need to begin transferring files to and from the drive. The battery life will vary depending on what you’re doing at the time, but most manufacturers rate their drives at about six hours of uptime while consistently streaming media, and around 20 hours if kept on idle standby.

Should I Get One?

When the iPhone 6s was first announced, analysts and journalists alike lambasted Apple’s decision to cling to a 16GB option. With the introduction of both Live Photos and 4K recording, it was clear that anyone who went the budget route with their next mobile purchase would run out of space trying to hold a measly 30 minutes of video at a time.

The best wireless HDDs out there come with a range of built-in media streaming capabilities, which work with smartphones, tablets, smart TVs, and media streamers like the Chromecast and Roku. Simply join the hard drive’s network via your TV’s interface, and all the movies, TV shows, or music you have stored on it will be playable through your (or a friend’s) home entertainment center.
With a wireless hard drive packed away, you can offload any photos or videos you take onto the drive in minutes. It’s great if you’d prefer not to pay for a cloud service and need extra space in a pinch when travelling. Of course, it also works just as well as a fully operational independent media server.
hthd1
All this added functionality doesn’t always come cheap, however.
Regular wired external hard drives can cost as little as $50 for 1TB of storage, but equivalent wireless hard drives would cost at least twice as much. This is due all the extra parts that manufacturers need to include with a wireless hard drive in order to make it work, including the battery and the various WiFi components.
Also, if extreme portability is what you’re after, these added chips and battery packs will also bulk the device up a bit. If you’re planning on stashing the drive in a laptop bag or a backpack it’s pretty much negligible, but if you like the idea of having the entirety of your system backups ready to slip out of your pocket at a moment’s notice, the increased heft could start to weigh you down.

As the cameras on our phones continue to take better pictures and higher resolution videos, the need for secondary storage options will only continue to grow. Wireless hard drives are the perfect solution for a world where one minute of 4K video takes up more than 1/3 of a gigabyte, and the storage footprint of our photos aren’t very far behind.  But while they’re perfect for road warriors, professional photographers, or any parent who plans on getting a full recording, their increased cost may not be worth it for someone with a 128GB drive on their phone and 3TBs of space on their cloud account.
Of course, the decision between the two is made a whole lot easier when you know that even though a wireless hard drive has “wireless” in the name, you can still plug it in whenever you’re back home. Every wireless hard drive worth its salt features both the option to connect over WiFi as well as the more standard route of connecting through USB 3.0, which increases the transfer rate tenfold–so it’s perfect for all situations. WiFi convenience when you want it, and blazing fast USB 3.0 functionality when you need it; what else could you really ask for?

How to Remove Your Windows Disk Encryption Key From Microsoft’s Servers

keys
Windows enables device encryption on many Windows 10 and 8.1 PCs out-of-the-box. It also uploads your recovery key to Microsoft’s servers, allowing you to regain access to you encrypted drives even if you forget their passwords.
If you’re not comfortable with this, though, it’s possible to delete the recovery key from Microsoft’s servers or even create a new key. This process even works on Home editions of Windows, even though they don’t have access to the full BitLocker encryption provided by the Professional versions.

You Probably Shouldn’t Do This

The recovery key allows you to regain access to your computer’s files even if you forget your password, or
upgrade the hardware on your system (which can sometimes lock you out of the encrypted drive). You just log into your Microsoft account online, find the recovery key, and type it into your computer to access the locked hard drive. This is a huge boon for home users who wouldn’t necessarily back up their recovery keys in a safe place, and might forget their passwords. Home users wouldn’t be happy if they lost all the files on their computers over something so silly.Realistically, you probably shouldn’t do this. It’s unusual that Microsoft is silently uploading recovery keys to its own servers, but it isn’t actually worse than the previous status quo. Previous versions of Windows — and the many current Windows PCs that still don’t ship with device encryption enabled — are just unencrypted. That means anyone could access their files if they can get their hands on the computer. Enabling encryption and giving Microsoft a recovery key is a big help against laptop thieves and other people who might want to snoop on your files.
Of course, the other side of the coin here is that Microsoft could be forced to give your recovery key to the government. Or, alternately, that someone could gain physical access to your computer and somehow get into your Microsoft account to access the recovery key and bypass the encryption. The tips below will take that recovery key away from Microsoft. But if you do this, you have to keep a copy of it yourself and store it somewhere safe. If you lose it, and you forget your password or update your hardware without disabling encryption first, you’ll be locked out of your computer for good.

Delete the Recovery Key From Microsoft’s Servers

To check if Microsoft is storing a recovery key for one or more of your PCs, open the https://onedrive.live.com/recoverykey page in your web browser. Sign in with the same Microsoft account you first signed in with on that Windows PC.
If you don’t have any keys stored on Microsoft’s servers, you’ll see a “You don’t have any BitLocker recovery keys in your Microsoft account” message.
If you do have recovery keys stored on Microsoft’s servers, you’ll see one or more recovery keys here. Click the name of your computer and then click the “Delete” link that appears to delete your recovery key from Microsoft’s servers.
Warning: Write down this recovery key or print it out and keep it somewhere safe before deleting it! You’ll need the recovery key in case you ever need to regain access to your encrypted files.

Generate a New Recovery Key

Microsoft promises they’ll quickly delete any recovery keys you remove from their servers. However, if you’re a bit paranoid, this probably won’t be good enough for you. You can instead have Windows generate a new recovery key that will never be uploaded to Microsoft’s servers.
This doesn’t require re-encrypting your entire drive. Basically, BitLocker encryption uses two keys. The first key is stored only on your computer and is used for encrypting and decrypting your files. The second key is used to decrypt the key stored on your computer. This process just changes the second key, which is the only one that ever leaves your computer anyway.
To do this, right-click the Start button and select “Command Prompt (Admin)” to open a Command Prompt window as administrator.
Type the following command and press Enter to temporarily “suspend” BitLocker protection:
manage-bde -protectors -disable %systemdrive%
Run the following command to delete the current recovery key:
manage-bde -protectors -delete %systemdrive% -type RecoveryPassword
Then run this command to generate a new recovery key:
manage-bde -protectors -add %systemdrive% -RecoveryPassword
Important: Write down or print out the recovery key displayed after you run this command and keep it in a safe place! This is your new recovery key, and you’re responsible for safeguarding it.
Lastly, re-enable the BitLocker protection:
manage-bde -protectors -enable %systemdrive%
You’ll see a message saying no drives in the computer support device encryption. However, they are encrypted. If you want to undo all your changes, you’ll need to disable encryption in a command prompt window.

Or Just Use BitLocker Instead

This is also the only official way to encrypt your Windows system drive if your computer didn’t ship with device encryption enabled. You can’t just enable device encryption later — on Home Windows PCs without device encryption, you need to pay for Windows Professional so you can use BitLocker. You could try using
TrueCrypt or a similar open-source tool, but a cloud of uncertainty still hangs over those. If you have the Professional edition of Windows — or if you’re willing to pay another $99 to upgrade to the Professional edition of Windows — you can skip all this and just set up normal BitLocker encryption. When you set up BitLocker, you’ll be asked how you want to back up your recovery key. Just don’t select the “Save to your Microsoft account” option and you’ll be fine. Be sure to write down the recovery key or print it out and keep it somewhere safe!

Again, most Windows users won’t want to do this. With device encryption, Microsoft moved from all Windows PCs being unencrypted by default to many Windows PCs being encrypted by default. Even though Microsoft has the recovery key, that’s a big win for data security and a big improvement. But, if you want to go farther, the tricks above will let you take control over your recovery key without paying for a Professional edition of Windows.

How to Add Contacts from Gmail, Outlook, and More to Windows 10’s Address Book

Many of us juggle multiple email accounts between our professional and personal lives. Instead of managing multiple separate address books, you can use Windows 10’s People app to bring together all your contacts into a single, centralized interface.

People App at a Glance

The People app is a hub for all your contacts. It’s a competent contact manager that can store a wide variety of information about each person, including name, email address, street address, title, phone number, and much more. As with the Mail and Calendar apps, the People app only works with online accounts. You cannot use this app to create and mange contacts that are stored locally in your PC.
The main view in the People app gives you a consolidated list of all the contacts in an alphabetized navigation pane on the left. To the right, you’ll see the details for a selected contact. If the People app has people listed in it the very first time you launch it, then you’ve probably entered your account details in another Microsoft app.

How to Import Contacts From Gmail, Outlook and Other Accounts

If you already have contacts in an online account, like Gmail, Outlook, or iCloud, you can add all those contacts to Windows’ People app in one fell swoop. To add an account, click the ellipses at the top right of the search field and choose “Settings”.
Any currently linked accounts will appear here. Click “Add an account” to display the “Choose an account” screen.
Select one of the online account types and follow the on-screen instructions to sign in with your credentials. The People app will then sync contacts with your online accounts. If you change a contact’s information on one device, it will get automatically synced with your other devices. It’s important to understand that you’re actually linking those services to all of Windows’ built-in apps. After setting up an account, all of Microsoft’s apps—Mail, Calendar, People, and so on—can use its information.
Note: Microsoft’s online help indicates that you can also hook up your social network accounts to the People app—but if you click “Get social apps” here on the Settings screen, it returns an error page. So it looks like this feature is broken for now.

How to Add a New Contact from the People App

To add a new contact, select the “+” button above the contacts list.
A new blank contact pane will open. If you have multiple accounts configured, then you’ll be prompted to choose which account you want that contact stored with. But if you have configured only one account, the new contact will, of course, be added to that account.
The New Contact display provides a wealth of fields for you. Fill the fields as much as you need. Press the Tab key to move from field to field. To change the label for a number (“mobile”, “home”, “work”, and so on), click the drop-down menu next to the current label. Select “Add Photo” to use an image from your Photos app. If you do not add an image, the initials for the contact will appear instead.
Select “Other” to add additional information fields to your contact. Several fields are available, including company, family, birthday, anniversary, and note fields. Click “Save” to add the contact to the People app.
To make changes to an existing card, select the contact and click the “Pencil” icon. Alternatively, right-click the contact in the contacts list and choose “Edit” from the pop-up menu. You’ll be given all the same options listed above.

Share a Contact

Sharing contact cards is a quick and easy way to share someone’s information with a friend or family member all at once (“Hey, what’s Grandma’s phone number and email address?”). To do so, display the contact, and select “More > Share a contact”. You’ll be asked to confirm this action (select the checkmark) and then the Share pane will appear on the right side of the screen.
If you choose to share via Mail, a New Mail pane will appear so you can email the contact information (in a friendly VCF format that can be imported to many other address book apps).
The People app is great for consolidating all your contact lists, but the big payoff comes when you sign into another Windows 10 device–you’ll notice that your address book is already filled in with your all your contacts and accounts.

How to Add and Change World Clocks on the Apple Watch

When you first set up your Apple Watch, you may or may not have a few world clocks on it. You can change the world clocks on your Apple Watch, but you’ll need to use your iPhone to do it.
Adding, subtracting, and changing world clocks on the Apple Watch would seem like it would be fairly intuitive, but it is not. In fact, in order to do anything with world clocks on your Watch, you must use your iPhone’s Clock app.
Here is the World Clock app on the Apple Watch. In this case, the only two clocks available are Cupertino and New York. Your Watch may vary.
So, let’s go ahead and change our world clocks so they are then reflected on your Apple Watch’s world clock app.
First, open the iPhone’s clock app and tap open the World Clock tab.
Once you’ve opened up the World Clock settings, tap “Edit” to access your world clocks. Next to each clock a “-” symbol will appear. To remove a clock, tap that symbol.
You will need to confirm your intentions by tapping the “Delete” button that appears to the right of each world clock city. It will then be deleted.
Now, tap the “+” symbol in the upper-right corner and you can pick your city or cities.
Now you see that we’ve added a few more cities to our world clocks on our iPhone.
Now, we’ll go back to our Apple Watch, and all our new clocks should be reflected in our World Clock app. For example, you see when we tap open Brasília, it shows us all the pertinent information about that city.
So, there you have it. Now you can add any cities you want to your Apple Watch and quickly check the time wherever you are without having to whip out your iPhone (unless you want to make changes, of course).
